Blackened Ahi Tuna Recipe
The inspiration of this Blackened Ahi Tuna recipe derives from a Japanese sushi restaurant. If you enjoy Asian cuisine, then you will love this ahi tuna recipe! This dish features our Cajun Blackening Spice and Orange Teriyaki Sauce recipes.
Ingredients
For the Ahi Tuna
- 1 1/2 pounds of fresh ahi tuna steaks, 1 inch thick
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 teaspoons butter
For the blackening spice:
- 5 teaspoons paprika
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon white pepper
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
For the Orange Teriyaki Sauce
- 1/3 cup teriyaki sauce
- 1/3 cup orange juice
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons fresh ginger root, minced
- 2 garlic cloves, crushed
- 1 teaspoon corn starch (to thicken)
Instructions
- First, make the orange teriyaki sauce. Start by heating a small pot on medium heat.
- Add teriyaki sauce, orange juice, soy sauce, brown sugar, ginger, and garlic. Mix together and allow to cook for 2-3 minutes.
- Meanwhile, whisk 1 teaspoon of corn starch with 3 teaspoons of water in a small bowl. Then pour in sauce and whisk thoroughly, and allow sauce to cook until slightly thickened (approximately 2 more minutes).
- Remove from heat then set aside.
- Next, preheat olive oil and butter in a skillet on high heat.
- Meanwhile, mix all ingredients for the blackening spice on a plate.
- Thoroughly rub the spice mixture on each side of the ahi tuna steaks, making sure to cover it completely.
- Place ahi tuna in skillet, searing both sides for 20-30 seconds for rare, 1 minute for medium-rare, or to your desired doneness.
- Remove the ahi tuna from skillet, and cut into thin slices.
- Arrange Blackened Ahi Tuna on serving plate and drizzle orange teriyaki sauce on and around the tuna. Enjoy!
Notes / Suggestions
This Blackened Ahi Tuna recipe is a little spicy. Feel free to leave out the cayenne pepper if you prefer a less spicy seasoning.
As an alternative rub, try encrusting the ahi tuna with black pepper, cumin, chili flakes and sesame seeds.
Also, as an alternative to the Orange Teriyaki Sauce, try using our delicious Creamy Ginger Soy Sauce instead!
